Tonle Sap Lake

The village waterway ends where Southeast Asia's largest freshwater lake begins.

After navigating the stilted houses and mangroves, your motorized boat enters Tonle Sap Lake. Water levels fluctuate dramatically here, rising several meters during the peak wet season from August to November.

Most visitors spend a portion of their 2 to 3-hour trip exploring the open water. You will ride in the same motorized wooden boat you took through the village.

Open Lake Viewpoint

15 minutesMotorized wooden boat

This is the point where the narrow village waterway opens up into the massive expanse of the Tonle Sap. The lake is so large you cannot see the opposite shore. The horizon looks more like an ocean than an inland lake.

Boat drivers idle on the open water so passengers can watch the sun dip below the horizon. This is a highly popular activity for late arrivals. Book an afternoon tour if you specifically want to experience the sunset.
